Parliamentarians from Asia
commit themselves to involve men in prevention of violence against women and
girls
September 10,
2009
Bangkok—The Asian Forum of
Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) and UNFPA are working
together to mobilise male parliamentarians of Asia-Pacific to prevent and
eliminate violence against women and girls through and by engaging men and
boys.
Several programmes have been
developed to achieve this goal. One of them was a consultative meeting of male
parliamentarians in Bangkok from 6-7 September where a Standing Committee of
Male Parliamentarians was constituted under the Chairmanship of the Hon. Sir Dr
Puka Temu, Deputy Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, with a membership of male
parliamentarians from Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, India, Iran, Malaysia,
Mongolia, Nepal and the Philippines.
This will be followed by a
parliamentarian session on 18 October during the 5th Asia-Pacific
Conference on Reproductive and Sexual Health and Rights in Beijing, China and at
the Asia-Pacific Women Parliamentarians’ and Ministers’ Conference to be held in
November 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
