Parliamentary Motion 2007: Australia's aid program and gender discrimmination

On 12 February 2007 Mrs Kay Hull MP moved a motion in the House of Representatives, supported by other PGPD members such as Mr Bob McMullan MP and Ms Tanya Plibersek MP, that Australia support the the aid program in its efforts to overcome poverty and gender discrimmination.

World AIDS Day 2005

Launch of the UNFPA State of World Population 2005 - The Promise of Equality: Gender Equity, Reproductive Health and the Millennium Development Goals

On 12 October 2005 the PGPD hosted the Australian launch of the UNFPA State of World Population 2005 - The Promise of Equality: Gender Equity, Reproductive Health and the Millennium Development Goals. Senator Marise Payne, Hon Secretary of PGPD hosted the launch. Parliamentarians, members of the diplomatic corps, other UN agencies and academics attended the launch. Ian Howie, UNFPA Representative to Vietnam launched the report, and Dame Carol Kidu MP, Minister for Community Development in PNG was the keynote speaker.

Motions were put in the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Western Australian, South Australian, Tasmanian and New South Wales Parliaments supporting the themes of the report.

MDGs and World Summit, September 2005

PGPD Members Hon Bob McMullan MP, Kelly Hoare MP, Margaret May MP and Maria Vamvakinou MP spoke to a Private Member's Motion in the House of Representatives on 5 September 2005 which urged the Australian government to work towards supporting the MDGs. Members also spoke on the need for reproductive rights to to be protected to achieve the MDGs.

Senator Claire Moore also made three speeches in the Senate on the MDGs and the need for women's rights, in particular their reproductive rights, to be upheld.
