AFPPD 12th General Assembly
The Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) hosted their 12th General Assembly and planning session in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in October. APGPD Chair and vice-Chair of the AFPPD Ann Sudmalis, presided over the proceedings.
Over 150 participants, including Members of Parliament and AFPPD’s strategic partners collectively confirmed to take follow-up actions on the statements of commitment made by AFPPD over the past two years on realizing gender equality, empowering women and girls, ending child marriage, combating human trafficking, investing in youth, ensuring healthy and active ageing, and promoting universal health care, thereby contributing to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) by 2030. The Forum also reaffirmed commitment to accelerate the implementation of the AFPPD Strategic Plan 2016-2019 for the remaining period up to 2019. Supported by the Japan Trust Fund through the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the 12th General Assembly was organised in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Sustainable Development (SLPPD), an AFPPD member national committee. Sri Lanka’s national committee for population and development was one of the founding members of the Forum. This strengthened national committee, now SLPPD, together with another recently revived national committee in the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as a new member, Tuvalu, were welcomed by the General Assembly. Tuvalu officially became the 30th member of AFPPD.
