The PGPD met with Tewodros Melesse, Director-General of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. The Federation, which looks to empower women and recognize their sexuality and sexual rights, has worked extensively in Asia-Pacific on issues of maternal health, family planning, and HIV/AIDS. The IPPF advocates for safe and accessible family planning options, for which 222 million women desire but cannot obtain.
The IPPF has also hailed a big step forward by reaching a new level of cooperation with Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (the BRICS) to ensure sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights. Meeting in South Africa in March, the BRICS agreed to a framework for better cooperation on population issues, including sexual and reproductive health, gender and women's rights, and better data collection and sharing.
