October 28, 2015
On October 19 Minister Julie Bishop officially launched Australia’s candidacy for membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2018-20 term.
As Minister Bishop stated, through the Council she would aim to advance ‘the rights of women and girls, governance and democratic institutions, freedom of expression, religious freedoms, human rights for indigenous peoples around the globe and national human rights institutions’, and will focus particularly on the Indo-Pacific region.
In her speech announcing the bid, Minister Bishop stated, ‘I have a particular interest in the rights of women and their role in peace, security and conflict and the empowerment of women’.
