The Australian Parliamentary Group on Population and Development expresses deep sorrow at the unexpected passing of Dr Babatunde Osotimehin - Executive Director of UNFPA.
Dr Osotimehin was a tireless advocate for public health, and the rights of women and girls. A former physician and public health expert, Dr Osotimehin was Nigeria’s Minister of Health prior to his appointment at UNFPA.
Dr Osotimehin visited the Pacific region regularly, and most recently was in Australia and Fiji in March 2017. The APGPD were pleased to meet with him to discuss the vital work of UNFPA, as the lead agency for delivering “a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.”
APGPD acknowledges Dr Osotimehin as a warm and caring advocate and leader. We share our sorrow with friends and colleagues across the globe, and our thoughts are with his family, the UNFPA and the countless women and girls who have benefited from his work.
